A new report from Teletrac Navman highlights ongoing challenges in equipment utilization, with many construction fleets struggling to turn data into action. The study found 74% of operators cite data accessibility as the biggest barrier to improving utilization, with equipment sitting idle as much as 50% of the time.

While 87% of fleets have invested in digital tools to track equipment use, many are not fully using them. About 75% still rely on manual logs, either alone or alongside digital systems, which can limit accuracy and real-time visibility. Only 28% reported having a fully implemented digital tracking system.

The report also points to maintenance as a key disruption, with nearly one-third of respondents saying it frequently impacts project timelines. In response, 27% of companies said they often rent or purchase additional equipment to offset downtime.

Equipment hoarding is another factor, with 67% of respondents reporting assets are sometimes kept onsite but not in use, often due to uncertainty around scheduling or maintenance.

The findings suggest that while digital tools are widely adopted, gaps in implementation and data use continue to limit efficiency across construction fleet operations.
