Seminars Highlight TCA's First Annual Tilt-Up Convention

The fast-growing tilt-up concrete industry will get its first convention this year as the Tilt-Up Concrete Association hosts a three-day event Oct. 12 - 15 at the Grand Hyatt Atlanta.

The fast-growing tilt-up concrete industry will get its first convention this year as the Tilt-Up Concrete Association hosts a three-day event Oct. 12 - 15 at the Grand Hyatt Atlanta.

The theme of the convention, the first of what is planned to be an annual event, is "Tilt-Up 4 Today: Energy, Environment, Economy, Efficiency,"and will feature seminars, round tables and a trade show.

The keynote speaker at this year's convention will be David D. Shepherd, AIA, director of sustainable development for the Portland Cement Association, who will deliver the presentation "Concrete Thinking for Sustainability."(For more information on tilt-up concrete and sustainability, see p. 22.)

The conference program will kick off Wednesday, Oct. 12, with "Tilt-Up Contracting A-Z,"a crash course in tilt-up construction for contractors.

Thursday and Friday will feature sessions for contractors, engineers and architects. Some of the sessions of interest to contractors:

  • Tilt-Up: The Future of Concrete - Where tilt-up has been and where it's headed
  • Challenging Panels - How to work with panels that are large, oddly shaped or otherwise unique.
  • Thin Brick & Exposed Aggregate Finishes - How to successfully incorporate these finishes into the face of the panel
  • Concrete Materials - How technology is changing materials
  • Presenting to Architects - How to become a TCA-approved presenter and tips for selling to architects
  • Converting to Tilt-Up - Changing projects designed for other building methods into tilt-up
  • Submitting Award Projects - Tips on preparing projects for the TCA Achievement Awards
  • Friday's sessions

  • Insulation Systems - The advantages and disadvantages of various insulation methods
  • Low Temperature Tilt-Up - How to properly build structures that need to maintain low temperatures
  • Tilt-Up Concrete & Sustainability - Understanding sustainability standards
  • Thermal Mass & TCA Energy Software - Information on TCA software that measures the energy performance of tilt-up structures
  • Friday will wrap up with a panel discussion and closing dinner. Saturday morning will be highlighted by a bus tour of local tilt-up buildings.
