Representing more than 150,000 civil eningeers worldwide, the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) brings attention to the needs of maintaining and modernizing the U.S. infrastructure. With historic Infrastrucutre Bill passing and influx of concrete infrastructure projects rejuvinating the country's concrete community, part of this is the recognition of the outstanding achievements in design, artistry in recent projects.

In this the ASCE Architectural Engineering Institute celebrates these with their Architectural Engineering Institute (AEI) Professional Project Award and their Insternational Student Desgin Competition. Traditionally, AEI announces project winners during its in-person annual Awards Banquet; however, the 2022 AEI awards ceremony was conducted virtually.  The Joan and Edgar Booth Theatre Boston University, Vanderweil Engineers; Brookline, MassachusettsThe Joan and Edgar Booth Theatre Boston University, Vanderweil Engineers; Brookline, MassachusettsAmerican Society of Civil Engineers

The AEI Professional Project Award was created to recognize the "outstanding achievements in design and construction by honoring the art and science of an integrated approach to architectural engineering." Its focus is on high-performance buildings, construction management as well as architectural engineering integration. The projects are evaluated on originality and innovative character, integration and collaboration, sustainability, energy efficiency and economics, effective use of technology and constructability and site logistics.

Quoted in the the official announcement, “The Professional Project Awards showcase the best and brightest of the current design and construction landscape,” says Daniel S. Grauerholz, LEED AP BD+C, Assistant Project Manager, Project Management Advisors Inc., Professional Project Awards Chair. “The projects submitted highlight not only the ingenuity and technical knowledge of architectural engineers around the world but the leaps the profession is taking and the baseline for what projects will look like as we move into a more advanced built world.”800 Fulton Market, Skidmore, Owings & Merrill; Chicago, Illinois800 Fulton Market, Skidmore, Owings & Merrill; Chicago, IllinoisAmerican Society of Civil Engineers

The International Student Design Competition

Attracting top architectural engineering undergraduate and graduate students, the annual AEI International Student Design Competition provides a unique venue for students to showcase their architectural engineering knowledge and skills. The competition encourages collaboration, research, innovation and peer review.

Quoted in the announcement, “Once again, the architectural engineering students presented professional and comprehensive competition projects. Their dedication, work ethic, and creativity were evident in their submissions.,” says Jonathan U. Dougherty, PhD, chair, AEI International Student Design Competition. “This competition is not only a highlight of the Architectural Engineering Institute’s annual programming, but also a consistent reminder that the future of the building design and construction industry is in the capable hands of these soon to be young professionals.”

Projects are judged in building integration, and in one or more of the following four categories: structural systems, mechanical systems, electrical systems, and construction. Sponsors provide the funding for the annual competition, which features First and Second Place named awards in each of the five categories.

The 2022 Student Design Competition required teams to design the building integration, structural, mechanical, lighting/electrical, systems and construction management for the three story, 90,000-sq.ft. building 2 of the Student Success Center, Tarrant Country College District in Fort Worth, Texas. The project is scheduled for completion in 2024.

Teams had a $42 million total building budget keeping any applicable local building codes in mind. Caliber X Arch Render Team 1 Penn StateAmerican Society of Civil Engineers | The Pennsylvania State University
