The next webinar in the ASCC Webinar Series is Mass Concrete: A Review of Today's Knowledge, Standards and Practices scheduled for Wednesday, September 20, 2017 3:00pm – 4:00pm CDT.
The webinar will be presented by Oscar Antommattei M.S., P.E. Kiewit Corporation.
Mass concrete (both, traditional mass concrete and thermally controlled structural concrete) commonly requires adjustments to construction means and methods to mitigate limits on maximum temperature and temperature difference, among other requirements. These limits affect the selection of concrete materials and mixture proportions, reinforcement details and field operations. Proper understanding of mass concrete behavior is necessary to adequately interpret the actions required to meet thermal demands and inherent limitations to perform the construction work.
Today’s specifications are typically very simplistic, providing default temperatures limits usually referred in industry standards; however, today’s industry standards often do not reflect the current state of knowledge or industry experience from field practitioners. This conflict frequently results in challenging and difficult scenarios during design and construction of mass concrete placements.
This presentation focuses on a fundamental review and summary of the implementation of today’s knowledge into industry standards by field practitioners, and provides an overview of design and construction challenges and opportunities related to mass concrete from a contractor’s perspective.
