New Jersey Driver Named “Best of the Best” At NRMCA Mixer Driver Championship

Ready mixed concrete mixer truck driver Edward “Eddie’ Rieper from Eastern Concrete Materials, Inc., a U.S. Concrete Company in Bogota, N.J., earned top honors at this year’s National Ready Mixed Concrete Association National Mixer Driver Championship held outside Dallas as part of NRMCA’s ConcreteWorks. Rieper, who earned the champion’s check of $2,500, is a veteran driver of more than 31 years and currently drives US Concrete’s Army tribute mixer, a Mack truck with a rear discharge McNeilus mixer. He is the 2014 Eastern Concrete Materials Driver of the Year, was the 5th place finisher in last year’s event and was also named the 2015 NRMCA Driver of the Year.

Now in its 12th year, this year’s national contest “was another close competition,” says NRMCA Executive Vice President of Operations and Compliance Gary Mullings. Ninety four drivers competed, the largest number to date, including state rodeo champions as well as NRMCA member company champions from around the nation. The champion was selected based on a cumulative score derived from competitions that included a driving challenge course, visual vehicle inspection, reaction-time test, delivery ticket station and a two-hour written examination. Awards were presented for the top five finishers. The Truck Mixer Manufacturers Bureau sponsored the event.

Second-place and a check for $1,000 went to David Mangold of Cocoa, Fla.. Mangold is a veteran driver of more than 24 years and drives for CEMEX. He currently drives a Peterbilt truck with a Schwing rear discharge mixer. He is a four-time CEMEX Florida Champion and 2015 top five finisher in the national competition.

Third-place and a check for $500 went to Gary Bethea of West Palm Beach, Fla.. Bethea has been driving for Maschmeyer Concrete Company for 18 years and is currently driving a Terex truck with a front discharge mixer. He is the 2016 Florida State Safety and Skills Competition Champion.

The forth-place finisher receiving a TMMB check for $300 was Benny Grippi of Ridgewood, N.Y. Grippi has been driving for Ferrara Bros., a US Concrete Company, for the last four years and is currently driving a Kenworth truck with a McNeilus rear discharge mixer. He is the 2016 Ferrara Bros. Rodeo Champion.

The fifth-place finisher receiving a check for $200 was Allen Rodgers from Concrete Supply Company in Charlotte, N.C. Rodgers is a veteran driver of more than 21 years and currently is driving a Peterbilt twin-steer truck with a Continental rear discharge mixer. He is the two-time CRMCA’s South Carolina State Champion.
