Since 1990 Allan Heydorn, graduate of the University of Missouri-Columbia School of Journalism, has been editor of Pavement Maintenance & Reconstruction. During that time he has lead the magazine’s development, guiding the industry’s most-influential publication as it works to provide contractors with essential information on business growth and development while keeping them abreast of industry trends, technological developments in materials and equipment, and on-the-job techniques that can improve productivity and add to a contractor’s bottom line.

In addition to leading an editorial staff devoted to the pavement maintenance industry, Allan developed and managed the four-day, 54-session conference for National Pavement Expo, the industry's premier trade show and educational event, from 1990 through 2019. In addition Allan managed the conference for Pavement LIVE (formerly National Pavement Expo West) from 2000 through 2013.

Contractors who make a living from paving, sealcoating, striping, sweeping, crack repair, and pavement repair have relied on Pavement Maintenance & Reconstruction since 1985 as a “how-to” guide for expanding and enhancing their services.

"Since 1990 I’ve been lucky enough to be the magazine’s editor. Over all those years, contractors and manufacturers have opened their doors to me as I worked to provide essential information on business growth and development while keeping contractors abreast of industry trends, technological developments in materials and equipment, and on-the-job techniques that can improve productivity and add to a contractor’s bottom line."

In addition to profiles of contractor operations, on-the-job "how to" tips, and case studies of unique or challenging projects, Allan manages the Pavement Awards, which the magazine introduced in 2015 to celebrate its 30th anniversary. Job awards (Seal & Stripe: Small Job, Seal & Stripe: Large Job, Paving: Parking Lot, Paving: Non-Parking Lot, and a Good Neighbor award recognizing charitable contributions) are voted on by Pavement's Advisory Board. A Best of the Web Award and Best Marketing Video Award are determined through online voting of the industry. The magazine's most prestigious awards are Sweeper of the Year and Contractor of the Year and those awards are determined by the Pavement staff based on research, recommendations and references within the industry.

Allan also manages and crunches the numbers to determine Pavement's Top Contractor lists, published in each June/July issue. The lists (which were published from 1998-2003, then begun again in 2013) are based on voluntary participation in an annual survey that requires third-party verification of annual sales figures. In addition to an overview of industry-wide survey results culled from all qualifying contractors, Pavement compiles lists based on industry segments: The Paving 50, The Striping 50, The Sealcoating 50, and the Pavement Repair 50.

In addition, Allan manages the conference aspect of AC Business Media's Ignite Construction Summit, started in 2019. The Ignite Construction Summit is the industry’s premier management-focused education and networking program, specifically designed for business owners and top-level managers who are dedicated to “lighting a fire” within their company. The construction industry’s immediate and long-term critical issues will be the focus during two days of expert presentations that will spark new ideas and new approaches while spurring action to help companies prosper more profitably.
